Magic of Eyri 014-Round Two

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Today’s episode: Zeroth and Uncle Shameless’ fight continues.  Steve learns that not everything in Eyri obeys the laws of science he learned in school.  A member of The Five betrays the band and the raven twins show up to make matters worse.

In our last episode: Zeroth finds Steve and Uncle Shameless and plans to bring the Boy back to the Hawk King–but Uncle Shameless won’t let give up without a fight.

Next Time on The Magic of Eyri (11.25.09): Every Which Way But Uth

Ramblings: Quite a few references in this episode.  Zeroth’s randomly appearing shield (as well as his yellow scarf) are a nod to the Mega Man character, Proto Man.  Zeroth’s “science defying pack” is a reference to the magical holding pack the character Snarf has in the fantastic fantasy-comedy comic strip SnarfQuest (by Larry Elmore).  SnarfQuest (along with the comic Bone by Jeff Smith) is a big influence on the Magic of Eyri.

Zeroth’s line about getting the pack from someone who was “reluctant” to part with it is a tip of the hat to the film Spartan.  Val Kilmer’s character has a similar line regarding a knife.   A personal favorite joke in this episode is Zeroth mentioning the Hunter band, Prophet’s Profits, which I wrote as a reference to the band Herman’s Hermits.  Prophet’s Profits are a Hunter band out of Eaner, a name I came up with while looking at my Beaner’s Coffee mug when I wrote the original novel.  Beaner’s has since changed its name to Biggby Coffee.

Arbal’s repeating crossbow is based (loosely) on a Chinese repeating crossbow. Arbal’s name comes from arbalest, which is a large crossbow (and one of the weapons Arbal uses). Cam’s name comes from a part of a compound bow.

Magic of Eyri 012-Double Trouble

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Today’s episode: The Hawk King sends his spies, a pair of raven twins named Delu and Uled, after Steve and his companions–but, they are not alone.  The twins have hired a team of bounty hunters to aid in their search.

In our last episode: The Hawk King demands to know who let Steve into his city.  Remmit, Kaz and Lexa are rounded up and put on trial for allowing The Boy to enter Da’Rahga.  However, things go a bit better for Remmit and Kaz than they do for Lexa.

Next Time on The Magic of Eyri (10.11.09): FIGHT!

Ramblings: I had a lot of fun creating the vocal effects for Delu and Uled for this episode. I added a PayPal donate button, so if you would like to support the podcast, feel free to donate whatever amount you wish.  A bit of trivia, the name of the Hunter band, The Five, is a reference to Ben Folds Five (which also only had three members).  I only realized later that it was also a reference to Arthur’s poor counting in Monty Python in the Holy Grail, as Cam (who named The Five) has a similar condition.
